Ok. So late last night we had these flood WARNINGS. Not flood WATCHES, but WARNINGS. Watches just mean that it MIGHT happen. Warnings mean that it WILL happen. Anyway, a bunch of houses in Del Mar are falling into the ocean and there is a gigantic sinkhole in Kearny Mesa on Balboa at the 15.
Ok. But then by about 11 or so, the sky cleared up and it was BEAUTIFUL. Kinda breezy. So I thought, wow what a great day to go fly my kite!
But things went badly from then on.
I went home, got my kite. When I drove back to campus, I spent 15 minutes driving around looking for a parking spot. I put almost 3 miles on my car just circling around!! Then, finally when I find a parking spot and get to the Revelle Plaza where I usually fly my kite, these clouds moved in and it started to drizzle!!
Well, I came to do what I came to do so I put my kite up anyway. And things went well. The sky cleared up again, and all seemed well for about 45 minutes.
Then suddenly my kite took a monster dive and got caught in the trees at the east end of the plaza. Oh boy. Shouldn't be too hard to fix, since I have done it before.
Well, it just so happened that the moment my kite gets caught in the trees, the wind started blowing REALLY hard. I mean, it was pushing the limits of the string!! This high tension made it really hard to control the kite and get the string out of the trees. It was pulling so hard my spool broke right in half. So I decided that it was hopeless and just cut the string and let the kite fly away.
I went to the Sundry Store to drown my sorrows in Pepsi. After all, this wasn't a cheap kite.
Anyway, I decided to go look for it. I figured it was in that big grassy area behind the Med school. But it wasn't. Then I looked up. It was flying by itself off in the distance. Caught in some more trees, I supposed.
So I went over there, it was in the med school parking lot, caught in some trees. There was no way for me to untangle it so I decided to wait for the wind to die down, then I would cut the string and the kite would hopefully glide down to the ground for me to get it back.
Well, I cut the string, and the kite floated across the valley (i.e. where Villa La Jolla Dr. is) and I hoped to God that it made it across the street and into the VA hospital parking lot, as opposed to falling down into the street and getting run over.
Well, it did. I made my way to the VA hospital parking lot and FINALLY retrieved my kite. Now there was a big long walk back to Revelle to get back to my office.
Anyway.
I added a page of links to my homepage, so you can check those out if you haven't already.
And I bought the new issue of Super Street where someone wrote a letter about my Rice-Boy Page appearing in their magazine. Fun stuff.
